The Governor signed into law a bill passed by the RI General Assembly prohibiting smoking in the workplace and all public buildings. This amendment to the “Public Health and Workplace Safety Law” will become effective on March 1, 2005.
The civil penalties are stiff, so you want to act now!
• 1st Violation - $250
• 2nd Violation - $500
• 3rd Violation - $1,000
This new law requires the posting of “state” specific NO SMOKING posters. The posters are to be placed at every entrance where smoking is prohibited, namely any establishment occupied by employees or the public in an indoor setting. In addition, this prohibition on smoking must be communicated to all existing employees by March 1, 2005 and to all prospective employees upon their application for employment.
