California DOSH Acting Chief Len Welsh announced on Thursday, July 21 st that the Division of Occupational Safety and Health would propose emergency regulations to prevent heat illness within a week due to heat-related deaths during this current heat wave. DOSH is not waiting for AB 805, a bill to require the OSHSB (Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board) to adopt a heat illness prevention standard no later than December 1, 2007 pending in the California Senate to become law. Action is needed now!

Federal OSHA's “General Duty” clause mandates employers must provide employees with a "safe and healthful" workplace. OSHA recognizes “Heat Stress” as a real danger to workers. It is advisable (especially in areas of high heat and humidity) to provide employees with helpful, possible life-saving information on recognizing symptoms and what to do for a person suffering from Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke .
