Cal/OSHA Issues Emergency Regulations!

NEW CAL/OSHA HEAT REGULATIONS!

The California 's Office of Administrative Law approved the EMERGENCY REGULATIONS regarding Heat Illness Prevention on August 22, 2005. These "emergency regulations" will remain in effect for 120 days expiring on December 21, 2005. In the meantime, the OSHSB will be submitting proposed regulations for “permanent” enactment.

The new regulations add Sec. 3395 Heat Illness Prevention to Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations. These regulations apply to all employees in outdoor work environments at those times when environmental risk factors are present. The new regulations include Provision of Water, Access to Shade, Employee Training and Supervisory Training .

The training is to include environmental and personal risk factors, procedures for recognizing signs & symptoms, evaluating and controlling exposure, importance of acclimatization, and the importance of water intake.

To assist California employers with training and reinforce the training, we have updated CPC's Heat Stress Poster created in 2002. In addition to the dangers of working outdoors, many other workplaces expose employees to heat-related illnesses in industries such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Factories
  • Bakeries
