Recent Expansion to Minnesota’s Leave Benefits Law

During Minnesota’s 2013 legislative session, Governor Dayton signed a bill expanding use of personal sick leave benefits to include care of relatives. An employee may use personal sick leave benefits as provided by the covered employer for absences due to an illness or injury to the employee’s child, as defined in Statutes Section 181.940 Subdivision 4, adult child, spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent, or step-parent. Minnesota does not have any medical leave (paid or unpaid) available other than the use of the employee’s sick leave for themselves or their sick minor child, adult child, spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent or step-parent.

The expanded leave section is covered on both the Minnesota Minimum Wage and Parental Leave Laws postings. Both postings have been updated with the mandatory changes to reflect the amendments. Update your Minnesota All-On-One™ poster now to be in full compliance.
