Maryland has revised the state’s Employment of Minors Fact Sheet which employers can download free from Compliance Poster Company here.  Employers must post the Employment of Minors Fact Sheets where youths under age 18 are employed.  (Md. Code Ann. § 3-214).

The posting contains new information about applying for a minor work permit online.  Under a new law effective Oct. 1, 2014, a parent or guardian is authorized to apply for a minor work permit by completing an online application that includes:

  • verification of the minor’s age;
  • a description of the work to be performed by the minor;
  • approval by the minor’s parents or legal guardian; and
  • any other information the commissioner may require.

The Fact Sheet also outlines the hours of work restrictions and occupational limitations that apply to minors. In general, when school is in session minors may work fewer daytime and weekly hours.  Minors may not work in listed occupations declared to be hazardous by law or regulation.

Work permit applications can be accessed online at: https://www.dllr.state.md.us/childworkpermit.  Work permits are printed from the website and must be signed by the minor, the minor’s parents or guardian, and the minor’s employer.  Unless an employer possesses a work or special permit for a minor, the minor may not work for the employer.  Employers are required to keep work permits on file for 3 years.
