DRUGS IN THE WORKPLACE!

A COSTLY PROBLEM FOR EMPLOYERS
Drug and Alcohol abuse is not just a problem on the streets!
According to recent government information, 77% of the adult illicit drug users work. Can you imagine the risks involved if you have an employee on the jobsite who is a drug/alcohol abuser? About 47% of industrial injuries are linked to alcohol. Drugs in the workplace can be devastating for both employers and employees…the problems you face include increased absences, injuries, errors, and employee morale. Increased injuries & accidents at the workplace mean higher Workers' Compensation insurance!

Every business is subject to the issues of drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace…it hits business both big and small! In fact, in a recent survey they mention that the smaller businesses are more susceptible than large businesses. Since many small businesses often do not have a “drug-free” policy in place the employee usually feels it is “user-friendly”.

While the overall percentage of users has not gone up greatly, it is still is a major problem in the 21 st century. Recent reports show Construction and Mining industries to have the highest percentage of alcohol abuse. They say that 1 out of 7 employees has a drinking problem.

Due to the potential dangers these problems produce, the Federal OSHA has created a special website “Working Partners” in an effort to assist employers fight this ongoing battle. The website has many tools of assistance including:

  • New Guide Helps Employees Understand DOT's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program
  • Fact Sheets on Drug-Free Workplaces for various Industries
  • Brochures to assist in a Drug-Free Workplace
  • Articles on Creating a Drug-Free Workplace Program, Tips for a Safe and Sober Office Party, etc.

Many states have state specific laws in regards to “drug and alcohol” abuse that affect Workers' Compensation payments, Unemployment payments and along with the Federal government, those businesses that have contracts with government entities. Ohio state fund participants can even qualify for a “special discount” on Workers' Compensation “premiums” if the company meets the requirements of the Ohio Drug-Free Workplace Program.

To assist you in dealing with this problem, CPC is happy to provide you with this information and a link to the new website. We also have a “Drug-Free” bilingual 11” x 17' laminated poster that might be just the “reminder” you need to reinforce your company policies.
