Remember, Federal, State and OSHA authorities can site you on numerous infractions during one visit. It happened to this small metal manufacturing company and it can happen to you.
OSHA has cited the Louis Berkman Partnership, a West Virginia metal manufacturer was recently cited for more than 23 safety and health violations which has resulted in a $288,000 fine. OSHA says the metal manufacturer willfully disregarded worker safety. The inspection was conducted as a result of the employer’s high injury and illness rate through the Agency’s Site Specific Targeting (SST) program. OSHA issued four alleged willful instance-by-instance citations for failure to provide machine guarding. An additional alleged willful citation was issued for failure to provide and ensure employees used appropriate personal protective equipment.
Furthermore, 18 alleged serious violations were cited for lack of machine guarding; mechanical power press deficiencies; dangerous noise levels; unsafe electrical practices; storage of oxygen cylinders with fuel-gas cylinders; failure to provide training for hazard communication, energy control procedures, and exposure control for first aid responders; unguarded shafts; and failure to ensure that employees were wearing proper eye protection.
This company could have saved $288,000 by investing merely $149 in our ”OSHA Injury and Illness Safety Program.” Don’t risk being targeted by OSHA for numerous potential violations. Compliance To-Do List
- The Federal all-in-one poster is required for your lobby, reception area, or interview room where applicants can readily see it.
- Be sure to post posters on separate floors and provide posters for multiple locations.
- Remember that in January 2007 California postings changed.
- Is your office in compliance with the new post-natal care laws which require a pre-defined area for nursing mothers.
- If you have a forklift in your warehouse you need to comply with the new forklift mandatory to post and mandatory to communicate laws. The best way to do this is to ask about our forklift training package.
Hot Tips
- The law requires you to display your posters at a location that all employees visit at least once per day such as a break room, lunch room, time clock or job site.
- You can display your compliance posters on the back of a door. All-On-One posters are easy to post on a door or on a limited wall space. They provide good visibility and yet are out of the way of traffic.
- Allow employees voting time. View the state voting laws to see how to comply with state voter requirements.
- Make it easy to stay totally in compliance. Eliminate multiple posting pieces and protect against employees removing pieces and reading without returning.
- New OSHA regulations require you to have a Bloodborne Pathogens Program in addition to all your State, Federal and OSHA 300 forms.
- You are required to post State and Federal Minimum Wage Laws even if none of your employees are paid minimum wage.
OSHA performance forms are a great way to keep track of how well your employees are doing.
